Climate warming amplified the 2020 record-breaking heatwave in the Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده

Abstract February 2020 was anomalously warm in the Antarctic Peninsula region and registered one of most intense heatwaves ever recorded Western Antarctica. The event featured unprecedented regional mean temperature anomalies (+4.5 °C) over between 6 11 highest local continental region. Taking flow analogs from past (1950–1984) recent (1985–2019) periods ERA5 reanalysis, here we quantify role climate change magnitude this 6-day heatwave. Results show that 2020-like are now at least ~0.4 °C warmer than period, which represents a ~25% increase magnitude. Given observed atmospheric circulation conditions, probability experiencing above ~2 has increased ten times since 1950–1984. aggravated severity can be largely ascribed to long-term summer warming rather trends.

Widespread Biological Response to Rapid Warming on the Antarctic Peninsula

Recent climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula is well documented [1-5], with warming, alongside increases in precipitation, wind strength, and melt season length [1, 6, 7], driving environmental change [8, 9]. However, meteorological records mostly began in the 1950s, and paleoenvironmental datasets that provide a longer-term context to recent climate change are limited in number and often f...

Why does the Antarctic Peninsula Warm in Climate Simulations?

The Antarctic Peninsula has warmed significantly since the 1950s. This pronounced and isolated warming trend is collectively simulated by 29 twentiethcentury climate hindcasts participating in the version 3 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. To understand the factors driving warming trends in the hindcasts, we examine trends in Peninsula region’s atmospheric heat budget in every simulation....

Alteration of the food web along the Antarctic Peninsula in response to a regional warming trend

In the nearshore coastal waters along the Antarctic Peninsula, a recurrent shift in phytoplankton community structure, from diatoms to cryptophytes, has been documen ted. The shift was observed in consecutive years (1991–1996) during the austral summer and was correlated in time and space with glacial melt-water runoff and reduced surface water salinities. Elevated temperatures along the Penin...
